Learn how to make a Sterling Silver Sculptural Necklace with Forged Wire Scalloped Links and Chainmaille Connections…
Learn to make this award-winning sterling silver sculptural necklace …
This design clearly makes a bold impression. The large, forged wire scalloped links pair with silver beads in a unique chainmaille connection achieving both visual appeal and a fluid drape. And there’s a matching wire hook clasp on the back for a consistent look.
Use 14-gauge wire to form curved links with large size open loops …
This is the 6th project in our series featuring these scalloped links. Using thick wire really makes them look and feel substantial. Forming with 14-gauge wire can be a challenge, but after working with the links on a smaller scale, you’ll be well-prepared for success.
Connecting the links with a pattern derived from Cleopatra-style chainmaille and adding silver beads really influences the overall appeal. The chain pattern helps the links lay properly while adding texture and interest.
You can learn to make these links with ease using our jewelry design system – Measuring Charts Made Easy.
Hammering thick wire flat and maintaining a consistent curve takes practice. But the lessons featured in our signature online course guide you through building your skills incrementally. Working from a pattern – or measuring chart as I call them – and knowing exactly where to grasp the wire and how to apply the forming pressure is the key. There’s also great information about how to control your forging with direction for targeting your hammer blows appropriately and how to correct your course as needed. Plus, the lesson offers tips and tricks to achieve the jump ring assembly with the beads – it’s easier than it looks when you know exactly how to approach the process.
