Patinas for Copper

Surface Coloration

Transform the surface color of copper for use in your jewelry.  Using patinas can really impact the look of copper jewelry.  There are a wide array of chemicals available, but this class will focus on a small list of mainly household chemicals to achieve the broad spectrum of coloration you see pictured.  This is not a project-based class and we will not be using the standard array of jewelry tools.  I will present instruction for 3 different methods: fuming, burying, and spraying. Many of these recipes require multiple days to process so the samples will not be completed in the class. You will get hands-on experience with the burying method using small plastic containers that you can take home with you.  I will demonstrate the fuming and spraying techniques so you can feel comfortable to try them out at home.  The results are not completely predictable, but the journey is really fun!!!
