Have you ever watched a jewelry making tutorial and then felt like you must have missed something when you try to do it yourself?
You’re not alone.
Jewelry instructors strive to help you make a piece of jewelry that catches your attention. It’s a prime characteristic of a creative soul to see something cool and want to make one yourself. Unfortunately, just because you’re inspired, doesn’t mean you have the proper foundation to really understand the information and be able to emulate the process. But you don’t know just how much you really don’t know – and neither does the instructor. So, they often breeze over key steps to fit the timeframe of a class or to avoid outlasting the average attention span. There is a limit to how much you can absorb in a session before you become fatigued, and the information just stops sinking in.
Learning to make jewelry is like learning to play a musical instrument …
Even if you understand the information intellectually, you still have to train your hands to play the various notes. Musicians practice scales and exercise their fingers to improve their transitions and develop muscle memory. There’s no sitting down at the piano for the first time and playing Mozart.
But for some reason, new jewelry makers often set similar expectations for themselves. And unfortunately, it’s often a recipe for failure.
Learning the basics – like opening and closing jump rings properly or gaining control with forming, and filing – is necessary for success with more advanced skills like soldering and stone setting. The trick is finding an instructor that offers stylish projects you can enjoy making while you are learning and honing those fundamental skills.
(No worries now though – you just found me!)
Just like with music, the skills needed to make jewelry build upon themselves and work together in different ways to achieve different designs. So, there’s not just a single linear path you can follow to learn how to make jewelry. But the more you understand about each of the fundamental skills, the easier it is to combine them as your projects progress in difficulty.
This is why every detail is painstakingly pointed out in our lessons.
Whether you are brand new to making jewelry or you’ve been dabbling for a while, I bet you will benefit from watching these free lessons.
Most people who watch them comment about how they’ve never heard things described so well – or at all if we’re being honest. Mainly because the basics just aren’t all that ‘sexy’. They don’t grab your attention and inspire your creative juices.
But once you’ve been making jewelry for a while, you find yourself continually struggling with the fit and form. And that’s when you start to glean just how much you don’t know yet.
So, these lessons are being offered for free to convey the value we offer.
There’s no better way to understand than to experience it for yourself – right?
Watch the lessons – even if you feel you already know how – because you’ve likely never seen a tutorial quite like this – and you’ll likely benefit at least in some small way.
If you are brand new to making jewelry and just acquiring your first tools, I recommend this 1×1 chain with beads bracelet and necklace set for your first project.
All you need is 2 pairs of pliers, and perhaps a bead mat.
- You can use copper jump rings to keep your materials cost down (low cost = low risk).
- You learn how to open and close a jump ring properly which is pivotal for jewelry assembly.
- And, you end up with a cute set while you learn and practice your first jewelry making skill.
If you are an intermediate maker – I still recommend you watch this short series of lessons.
You may be surprised by the insights offered. The details may resonate with you more now that you have some experience.

This minicourse showcases innovative methods for using liver of sulfur to create a colorful patina on copper blanks (or components).

This free online course provides all the information you need to create your own copper earrings including comprehensive fundamental lessons for punching holes, filing and sanding your copper blanks. Because good preparation is key for a great patina.
